To replace the ball rivets with flat rivets, you’ll need the following tools:
- A pair of pliers
- A Phillips head scresdriver
- A flat head screwdriver
Flat rivets are sold in packs of 4, which is enough to change the flat rivets in two boots, since you need two flat rivets per boot.

Removing the ball rivets
1. Start by removing the ball rivets from the inside the boot shell. Since these rivets have thread locker on them, you’ll need to use both a Phillips head screwdriver and pliers.
2. Hold the outer part of the rivet with the pliers while using the Phillips head screwdriver on the inside screw. Apply firm pressure to twist and loosen the rivet.

3. Once removed, take off the ball rivet screws from the washer inside the boot. Keep the washer safe – you’ll need it for the flat rivets.

Installing the flat rivets
1. Flat rivets come in two parts: a Phillips head screw (goes to the inside the boot) and a flat head counterpart (goes on the back strap).

2. Insert the Phillips head screw through the washer, then place it inside the boot shell.

3. The outer flat head counterpart goes through the hole in the back strap. Unlike the ball rivet, the shank of the flat rivet won’t extend through the strap, but the counterpart screw will extend enough to allow fastening.

4. Once the rivet parts are in position, first hold and push the outer part with your finger, whilst fastening the screw with a Phillips head screwdriver. Then use a Phillips head screwdriver on the inside, and a flat head screwdriver on the outside to securely tighten the rivet.

Final adjustments
- Before fastening, double-check that the back strap is attached at the correct holes to ensure a proper fit for your horse. Flat rivets are not designed for quick removal, so this is the time to ensure the correct back strap length.
- Secure both flat rivets and consider using thread locker for a permanent hold. If you skip the thread locker, check the rivets regularly to ensure they stay tightly closed.
- With the flat rivets installed on the inside of the boot, the back strap remains permanently closed on that side. The ball rivets on the outside allow you to open and close the back strap as needed for putting the boots on and taking them off.
By following these steps, the flat rivets will be securely and properly fitted.
