Rethinking Horse Care
People naturally tend to look for the easiest way to get things done; in that sense, we’re not so different from horses. A horse moves only as much as it needs to reach food and water. Likewise, humans often do only as much as is necessary to meet their own needs, even when it comes to caring for another living being. Unfortunately, this sometimes means neglecting the very basics of a horse’s wellbeing.
Flex Boots were created to inspire people to think more holistically about horse care and to connect the ideas of barefoot horse boots and natural hoof care with true everyday horsemanship. That has been our mission from the very beginning.
As equine hoof care professionals since 2004 and long-time horse owners, we’ve lived alongside our six-horse herd for over twenty years, continuously developing and expanding their living environment every summer. We observed our horses’ behavior and kept improving their space because good enough was never enough.

Horse Care as a Way of Life
When you bring a horse into your life, you take on a great responsibility. True horse care is not just about riding or equipment; it’s a way of life. It includes everything from nutrition, shelter, bedding, paddock surfaces, and forage quality to access to clean, unfrozen water, safe fencing, daily cleaning, body care, grooming, hoof and dental maintenance, and much more.
From the start of our careers, we’ve encouraged horse owners to take an active role in maintaining their horses’ hooves. Light weekly rasping between professional trims helps the hooves maintain their natural structure and supports correct biomechanics. A horse’s hoof should wear naturally and stay in shape at all times. It should not grow for weeks and then be shortened drastically in one go. That approach is neither natural nor ideal for the horse.
This is the foundation of natural hoof care: maintaining balance and structure continuously so that the horse moves freely and comfortably.

Designed with the Horse’s Hoof in Mind
This philosophy was central in the design of Flex Boots, a new generation of flexible horse boots created for both daily training and rehabilitation hoof boots use. Many riders look for easy fit hoof boots that will “grow with the hoof,” but that idea is fundamentally flawed. A horse’s hoof should not be growing; it should stay in its natural, functional form.
Flex Boots are sized in 5 mm increments, which equals 2.5 mm per side of the hoof. If your horse’s measurement is at the upper limit of a size and the shell feels too tight, we recommend choosing one size up and using a thin insole. This ensures the boot fits the hoof’s structure comfortably without restricting movement.
It’s important to remember that the hoof should not have any distortions that go against its natural structure, such as a long toe, flares, or high heels. The hoof capsule should closely follow the shape of the coffin bone. Only then can the horse move optimally and biomechanically correctly. Properly maintained hooves allow protective horse footwear like Flex Boots to perform as intended.
Engineered for Natural Movement
Flex Boots also feature the most anatomically correct breakover point on the market. This design supports the horse’s natural biomechanics, reducing strain on tendons and joints. The firmer toe area provides stability during lift-off, while the softer rear section flexes with the heel for optimal comfort.
These hoof protection boots are suitable for everyday use, endurance riding boots, and rehabilitation purposes, offering a perfect balance between durability and flexibility.
All these features work in harmony when the horse’s hooves are well cared for.
Sometimes people say we expect owners to trim their horses’ hooves “to fit Flex Boots.” That’s not true. What we ask is that you maintain your horse’s hooves for the horse’s sake. The bonus? Your Flex Boots will fit and perform better as a result.

A Step Toward Better Hoof Health
Flex Boots combine functionality and compassion, encouraging a deeper understanding of what natural hoof care truly means. They’re not just hoof protection boots; they represent a mindset shift toward respect, responsibility, and freedom for the horse.
Whether your horse is in rehabilitation, training, or endurance riding, Flex Boots provide reliable and flexible protection for the hoof. They support the horse’s natural movement and comfort – every step of the way.
